My beginning battle to kill fruit flies

My struggle to kill fruit flies began back in Liberia where I was born. A big mango tree in our back yard was the main reason why I had to start learning at an early age how to get rid of the fruit flies. It produced more fruit than we could consume so the over ripe ones would fall to the ground and slowly rot. As you may or may not know ripe fruits are the best breeding ground of fruit flies.

Know the feeling?

When my family and I moved to the United States a few years I thought we wouldn’t have to deal with fruit flies anymore but I was dead wrong. Just one little overripe fruit slip-up on the counter and fruit flies will appear out of nowhere.

They were embarrassing. It was hard to invite guest over because of fruit flies in the house. The guests might be forced to kill fruit flies with you. I remember that feeling when I walked into the house and a fruit fly is the first thing that greeted me. One of them flew into my mouth one day and that was when I’d had enough. I had to find a quick and effective way to kill fruit flies.

The methods I used to kill fruit flies

I learned of multiple ways to kill fruit flies outside of the original newspaper swat method. These included some natural solutions and some chemical ones. None of them seemed to get rid of fruit flies completely and I had to keep applying them over and over to see results.

I got tired of those so I moved onto regular fruit fly traps but got the same bad results there too. I was finally about to give up on trying to kill fruit flies when I luckily stumbled across a fruit fly manual online that worked wonders for me.

Check out the site of the fruit fly manual that saved me.

Why this trap worked to kill fruit flies

One of the first things I learned about how to kill fruit flies from the manual was the fact that I had to know their source to eliminate the problem completely. In the past I had only been using temporary solutions when it came to killing fruit flies. No wonder why I had to keep doing the same things over and over.

This fruit fly trap worked to teach me how to get rid of fruit flies naturally, but what separated it from the other natural methods was the fact that I only had to set it up once. It didn’t use any chemicals to kill fruit flies which was good because we have a few young kids in the house who didn’t need to be exposed to those harmful substances

Unlike the fruit fly traps I had used in the past to kill fruit flies it’s instructions were very easy to set up. It took about 25 minutes of my time to have it completely set up and once it was finished it immediately went to work. Within 4 hours all the fruit flies that were visible were in the catcher.

Over the next few days it continued to catch fruit flies with no extra work on my part. All I had to do was sit back and watch. This was such a relief because before getting it I was afraid of another failed solution. There are many ways out there to kill fruit flies but for my friends and family but I wouldn’t recommend anything else when it comes to killing fruit flies.

I am excited about finding a reliable way to kill fruit flies in my house so I just wanted to spread the word and hopefully help others in the process.

How To Kill Fruit Flies By Knowing The Enemy

So you’re probably thinking to yourself how do I kill fruit flies? Well, before you go head off into a shootout with the nasty buzzers I’d like to make sure you are well armed with some information about the enemy. Like any other enemy when it comes to killing fruits flies it helps to have some intel.

Kill Fruit Flies by knowing their cycle

kill fruit flies life cycle

Fruit flies go through four stages in their growth process and you can kill fruit flies in any of these stages. However before you begin to get rid of fruit flies you may need to know what the stages are first.

The four stages a fruit fly goes through are egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The following is a brief description of each of the fruit fly stages.

Stage 1: Egg – Fruit flies only live for a period of two weeks but during this short period a single one could lay up to 500 eggs.  This fast reproduction rate makes it extremely difficult to kill fruit flies and get rid of them quickly. Due to the nature of their eggs fruit flies will only lay them in the surface of moist, organic materials. This is the reason why they are constantly seen around decaying fruits and veggies. This is the weakest point that you can use to kill fruit flies.

Stage 2: Larva – This stage occurs around 24 hours after the fruit fly egg has been laid. Around this period the fruit fly will come out as a larva and slowly begin to take shape. Learn how to kill fruit flies naturally in this stage.

Stage 3: Pupa – Consider the last formative stage, this is when the fruit flies get their wings and their color. Once they reach this stage it becomes more difficult to kill fruit flies because they are now able to buzz around your house. Don’t be worried though… I have a little secret that I’ve used to get rid of fruit flies even if they have already hit this stage.

=>> Use these 3 easy steps to kill fruit flies once they reach the critical stage 3 <<=

Stage 4:  Adult – At this stage the fruit fly is finally formed and considered a reproducing adult. They waste no time doing so because once they hit this stage they can begin reproducing in less than 2 days which makes your fruit fly control difficult.

Kill fruit flies while eliminating breeding grounds

The fruit fly trap I mentioned above is the best way I’ve found so far to kill fruit flies, however, they’ll keep coming back. As with anything the best offense is defense. Your defense in this case would be eliminating the breeding grounds so you don’t have to keep killing fruit flies. But doing this will also kill fruit flies in their younger stages.

How to eliminate breeding grounds to not kill fruit flies again

  1. Throw away wet trash frequently.
  2. Dump rotting fruits/vegetables or put them in the fridge.
  3. Look for any moisture in home plants.
  4. Check your drain for any food particles stuck in there.
  5. Thoroughly dry dish rags, wet mop etc frequently.

If you do these things regularly you will find that you no longer need to kill fruit flies on a constant basis.

How To Kill Fruit Flies

People are always looking for ways to kill fruit flies because to be honest fruit flies are a nuisance that everyone has to deal with.  No one really knows where they come from or how they end up in our houses but once they get there fruit flies seem to multiple at a really fast pace. You’re probably here because you’re looking for a way to kill fruit flies outside of the traditional newspaper swatting method.

They are three main ways to kill fruit flies; you can kill fruit flies naturally, with chemicals and you can also get rid of fruit flies by using a trap.

How To Kill Fruit Flies Naturally

Using a mixture of oil, lemon grass and water

Mix about 8 drops of lemon grass oil with a liter of water. Pour the solution into any spray bottle you have handy. To begin getting rid of fruit flies simply spray the solution on them and they’ll die instantly. You can also spray the liquid in and around their breeding grounds to more breeding.

Killing Fruit Flies with Vinegar

Vinegar works quite well to kill fruit flies in the house. Mix a good amount of vinegar with a water-down soap solution and put it in a jar. Fruit flies are attracted to the smell of this mixture so they’ll begin to fly into the jar. Once they are in the jar the soap water gets them stuck and drops them to the bottom. The drowning will kill fruit flies once they hit the bottom.

The Oil and Ammonia method

This works really well to kill fruit flies around the drain or sink area in the kitchen. The Ammonia works to eliminate all particles in the drain including fruit flies or anything that attracts them. Pouring vegetable oil around the drain coats the flies in oil which stops them from breeding or flying away for that matter.

Use a bottle/jar to trap to get rid of fruit flies

This is not a really good way to get rid of fruit flies but it works for some folks. Simply place a ripe piece of fruit in the jar and it will slowly attract fruit flies over time. Once you’re satisfied with the amount of flies in the jar, shut it and let them out somewhere far from your home. This way you don’t have to kill fruit flies if you don’t want to.

Kill Fruit Flies Using Chemicals

The Fly Paper

This method is considered one of the oldest ways to kill fruit flies. The substance that the paper is made of is very sticky so the fruit flies get stuck when they come in contact with the paper.

Sprays

Different kinds of sprays have popped up in the market for killing fruit flies. The chemical substances in these sprays kill the fruit flies instantly on contact. The downside to using this method to kill fruit flies is the fact that the chemicals could also be hazardous to house pets and young kids.

The Bug Zapper

This product is designed to kill fruit flies using light and electric current. The fruit flies are attracted to the tube light in the device center. What kills fruit flies is the net mesh that zaps them with electric current before they can land on the light.

Using Traps to kill fruit flies

All the above methods work as good fruit fly control and elimination methods. However, the best way to kill fruit flies is by using a trap. Using a trap to kill fruit flies helps you avoid having to deal with all the headache and messiness associated with some other methods.

There are different traps out that claim to work great for killing fruit flies. I tried them all and wasn’t really impressed with any of them. I was about to give up on traps until I found one that worked like nothing else I’d ever tried before.
